It’s one thing to put together a job posting that lists duties, responsibilities and essential skills needed, but it’s an entirely different task to explain how jobs ranging from a janitor to a top executive are engaged in communicating your company’s Catholic values and mission. That’s a challenge, and we’re here to help you conquer it.
There are multiple reasons why an organization should integrate faith-based values into every job it has. First and foremost, doing this clearly communicates each employee’s involvement in the overall mission, builds a strong work culture and empowers them to bring the faith into their job. Being explicit about the values and identity of the organization also naturally attracts candidates who are more mission-aligned, further building workforce cohesion.
But there are also legal benefits to taking this extra step. By clearly connecting a job to the religious identity of the organization, you can show that the position falls under the Ministerial Exception, a legal doctrine that recognizes that civil courts should not be intervening in religious matters. Recent legal rulings involving the Ministerial Exception, like Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC, or Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru, emphasize the importance of articulating clear statements aligned with Catholic teaching across organizing documents, policies, and communications.
Doing this creates a safeguard against pressures to conform to secular norms and protects your organization. This holds true whether you are a parish posting a job or a privately-owned Catholic company searching for individuals who will embody your values.
If you’re having a hard time imagining what this would look like, check out this example of language that could be added to strengthen the Catholic identity for an accountant position.
