Helping Leaders Build a Culture that Reflects Catholic Identity
Over the past several months, we have shared stories of leaders navigating difficult conversations with employees. Whether explaining a health plan exclusion, discussing Church teaching, or answering questions about workplace policies, one theme has emerged consistently.
Catholic leaders are being asked to represent their organization’s mission every day.
Most of those leaders never expected that responsibility to include conversations about contraception, infertility treatments, gender identity, or other morally complex issues. Yet these conversations are becoming increasingly common, and how leaders respond has a lasting impact on the culture of their organization.
That is why CBA created Catholic Professional Development.
Formed Leaders Form Culture
This new formation program was built around a simple conviction: formed leaders form culture.
The goal is not to make leaders experts in theology or employment law. It is to help them confidently connect the mission of their organization to the decisions they make and the conversations they have every day.
Formation begins long before a difficult employee conversation.
It begins with the way an organization introduces itself to prospective employees. It continues through hiring, onboarding, leadership development, employee policies, performance conversations, and benefits administration. Every interaction communicates something about who an organization is and what it believes.
Catholic Professional Development was designed to help leaders intentionally reflect that identity throughout the entire employee experience.
Earlier this year, we invited a group of member organizations to participate in a pilot program. Their feedback confirmed what many of us have already experienced.
One participant shared:
“It made me realize the importance of integrating catholic identity into job descriptions, onboarding, as well as on-going training with staff to ensure all employees are aware of our culture. I look forward to the next lessons to hopefully learn how to incorporate Catholic identity into the HR architecture of our organization.”
That insight captures exactly what we hoped the program would accomplish.
Mission is not sustained by a handbook alone. It is strengthened when leaders understand how to weave Catholic identity into the ordinary practices and conversations that shape organizational culture.
Beginning in August, Catholic Professional Development will be available to all CBA member organizations.
The program combines short, practical lessons with downloadable resources and real-world examples that leaders can immediately apply within their own organizations. Whether you serve as an executive, pastor, principal, HR professional, manager, or supervisor, the courses are designed to help you navigate today’s challenges with greater clarity, confidence, and fidelity to your Catholic mission.
Our first course pathways focus on the two most common areas where leaders seek guidance: strengthening Catholic identity in Human Resources and responding to employee questions about health plans and morally complex issues.
Future courses will continue expanding this approach to help Catholic organizations strengthen mission throughout every aspect of the employee experience.
The culture of a Catholic organization is not formed by chance. It is formed through the daily decisions and conversations of the people entrusted with leadership.
We are excited to partner with you in that work.
Because formed leaders form culture.
